About the Film
I have spent the last 5 years working on a documentary film about the fight against fake news and disinformation. I accompanied investigative journalists from the New York Times and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists as well as computer scientists from UCLA and UC Berkeley who have built software that can autonomously detect conspiracy theories online. They are working closely with neuroscientists from UCLA, whose research with epilepsy patients has revealed a lot about how information is processed in the brain at the level of individual neurones.
HOW TO BUILD A TRUTH ENGINE took me on a journey from the information battlefields of our time into the innermost recesses of our brains, during which two things became increasingly clear:
First, those who can hack our information feed, can hack our mind.
Second, if we lose our grip of the truth, we will lose our civilisation.

About the Director
Based in Vienna, Austria, filmmaker Friedrich Moser has been writing, directing, shooting and producing award-winning documentaries since 1999. In 2001 he founded blue+green communication, in 2022 he founded Friedrich Moser Film GmbH. His productions have been exhibited in festivals around the world, on Netflix, Prime, Apple and other platforms. They have been broadcast all over Europe, several of them also being theatrically released. His latest film HOW TO BUILD A TRUTH ENGINE looks into why we are so susceptible to Fake News, disinformation and conspiracy theories - and what can be done about it.
Friedrich is also co-founder of the Open Circle Lab, an initiative to produce workshops and materials to accelerate knowledge transfer and literacy about emerging technologies. The first workshop-series “Influencers@School” teams up educators and influencers to provide an eye-level, immersive, hands-on media & social media literacy experience to students aged 14-19.
Friedrich is also co-founder of a California-based IT start-up developing a non-hallucinating, transparent AI-powered narrative intelligence platform.
