Abstract
Recently, we had the implorations by the US Big Tech AI companies to be somehow “reigned in” after the rogue AI Agent incidents. This resulted in the announcement by president Trump of an AI Task Force which will “protect the interests” and “improve the lives” of Americans. This task force is to be led, interestingly, by the Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton and report directly to Trump. The US president also hosted top AI executives who then signed a commitment to better “self-police” their companies AI models.
These recent developments come after overt attempts by the Trump administration and the Big Tech oligarchs to weaken EU digital regulation in general and the AI Act in particular during the EU discussion of the Omnibus bill. The EU institutions and the EP specifically, stood firm against these concerted attacks with the pro-active support of dighum. This, together with the debunking of the “regulation strangles innovation” myth has somewhat improved the global positioning towards the need for guardrails protecting against harms from powerful technologies under development.
About the Speaker
Michael McNamara is an active and influential member of the European Parliament. He was co-reporter for the Digital Omnibus on AI which achieved a reasonable balance between enabling industrial adjustments via an amended timetable and providing human rights safeguards. He also successfully championed an amendment to enable the first EU-wide ban on AI “nudifier” tools.
