AI is not stopping at music either. Computers analyze, recommend and produce musical content and will play a massive role in shaping the digital music and media world. But do they also understand what music expresses for us, how it functions as a means of human expression and communication? Can the expressive aspect of music be measured, described and explained? And where are the limits?

Gerhard Widmer provides insights into his many years of basic research into AI models that recognize emotions in piano recordings and learn to play “expressively” themselves - alone or together with human pianists. Interested visitors will have the opportunity to try out the latter…
